Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.

Albert Einstein

Why We Established Modal

Modal Planning was established to approach infrastructure differently.

After years working within large multidisciplinary consultancies, we saw how corridors and transport systems were often planned in isolation from land use, community and long-term spatial outcomes.

Movement was treated as a technical problem. Urban form became a by-product.

Modal was created to integrate these systems from the outset.

This practice was built on the belief that infrastructure shapes daily life and carries responsibility beyond short-term capacity outcomes.

Grounded in Country

Our work recognises that infrastructure sits within Country and that planning decisions influence land, water and community over generations.

This perspective informs how we structure corridors, assess growth and approach accessibility. We do not separate movement from place. We understand them as interconnected systems.

Country is not a branding device. It is a framework for responsibility.

From Transport to Integrated Urban Systems

Modal’s foundation lies in transport planning, but our practice has evolved deliberately.

We have expanded into land use integration, spatial intelligence, accessibility and urban design translation. Our team now combines policy alignment, growth modelling, corridor strategy and civil delivery experience.

This allows us to work across the full progression of urban development, from high-level strategy through to coordinated implementation.

How We Work

We are a senior-led practice.

We prioritise clarity, rigour and integration over volume.

We work closely with councils and agencies to structure decisions early, reducing reactive infrastructure responses later.

Our focus is not simply on moving vehicles or modelling networks. It is on shaping urban systems that support daily life.
